Previously, we had discussed the basic connectors topic. However, there are some other kinds of connectors that are used for complex and specific contexts. You can use it according to its classification and your communication needs.
A connector is an adverbial conjunction, or a word you can use to start, connect, or finish sentences, arguments, and ideas in your speech. For example:
- This building was remodeled a long time ago.
- Sorry, but the website is currently unavailable.
Let's see what other types of connectors exist:
1. To talk about the past tense
This is used to talk about the past tense, or to refer to something that already happened.
- A long time ago
- In ancient times
- Not long ago
- In former times
- In the old days
2. To talk about the present tense
This is used to state a fact or idea that is occurring in the current time or moment.
- At present
- At the present time
- These days
- In this day
- In this age
3. To present an example or reason
This type of connector is used to show an example or reason that supports the idea being expressed.
- In addition
- What's more
- Besides this
4. To tell the truth
In this way, you can present a fact, idea, or argument that sustains a total truth.
- To tell the truth
- In fact
Be careful with the use of the connector "actually" because some speakers tend to believe that this word means the same as "currently".
This confusion happens because "actually" looks similar to the Spanish word "actualmente" whose translation in English is “currently”.
5. To give another type of information
This type of connector is used to give information against general expectations.
- All the same
- Even so
6. To present aspects
This is used to present the positive or negative side of a situation.
7. To present a conclusion
This expresses consequences, conclusions, or direct results.
- As a result
8. To present qualities
This indicates differences or similarities between arguments, ideas, and situations.
- In the same way
- On the other hand
- In contrast
9. To express possibility
This type of connector lets us affirm that something is true or indicates the possibility that something can be true.
